Research background

I am an integrative scientist with special interest on increasing our knowledge about responses of natural populations to environmental stress caused by pollutants and other human-induced environmental changes. My overall research goal is to develop a solid theoretical and applied framework to assess, and to prevent that stress on natural aquatic communities. Part of my research has been focusing on ecotoxicological effects of chemical (atrazine, copper, cadmium) and physical (UVR) stressors on freshwater algae. I combined short and long-term exposures to understand the structural and physiological impacts of chemical and physical stressors on aquatic communities. These studies have been carried out at different levels of biological complexity, from pure cultures to natural communities, using also communities developed in microcosms and extensive field surveys. Other part of my research has been focusing on the ecological assessment of water quality-related problems in rivers and reservoirs, including the implementation of international programs, as the Water Framework Directive (WFD). I have participated in intensive and extensive field studies, relating atmospheric events with the structure of phytoplankton communities in reservoirs, and also assessing the production of undesirable compounds in rivers (geosmine). Most of these works resulted in ecological-friendly practices to improve and manage the water quality, or manuals widely used for water assessment (WFD). Therefore, my particular research interests are:

- Ecotoxicology of algal populations and communities and stress acclimatization mechanisms
- Role of environmental factors modifying toxicity of metals and herbicides
- Impacts of global change (UV radiation, temperature) on aquatic ecosystems

- Trophic transfer of impacts
- Ecotoxicology of new materials (nanomaterials)
- Multiple-stress ecology
- Stream and reservoir ecology, water management
- Ecological quality assessment and management of water bodies and reservoirs
- Ecology of invasive species (zebra mussel)
- Coupling between environmental factors and structure of aquatic communities
