| THE INSTITUTE |
| |
The Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (IPE-CSIC) was founded in 1983 as a result of the union of two former research centres, the Institute of Pyrenean Studies (created in 1942) and the Pyrenean Centre for Experimental Biology (founded in 1963). The site of the Institute was initially in Jaca (Huesca province, Central Spanish Pyrenees), and in 1991, another site with office and laboratory facilities was established in Zaragoza, in the middle of the Ebro River Depression. The uniqueness of an institute with two sites provides a rare opportunity for a research center to cover an ample range of contrasted, representative European ecosystems.

OBJECTIVES |
The main objective of the Institute is to study the structure and dynamics of natural systems, particularly in mountain areas, in relation to Global Change, that is, changes induced by climate fluctuations and by human-induced landscape transformations, at different temporal and spatial scales.
GENERAL LINES OF STUDY |
- The interactions between human activities and the dynamics of ecosystems at the level of species and communities
- The dynamics of climate variability and the hydrological and ecosystems feedbacks
- The effects of land-use changes and climate variability on soil conservation, vegetation and water resources generation
- The interactions between highlands and lowlands (refuge and interchange of species, complementarities in land management, in-site and off-site effects), and the improvement of the mountain and lowland ecosystems use and management
- The conservation of species, communities and landscape complexes
- The integration of physical and biological factors in order to provide a holistic perspective to ecosystem and landscape conservation and management
- The landscape and ecosystem restoration.
