Integrating scientific, technical, economic, and social perspectives for
ecological restoration: Monreal del Campo Springs – Jiloca river case study
This study
is focused in the framework of river ecological restoration since the growing
interest of different social actors on performing actions in degraded rivers
to improve their state. So,
aims of this study are:
§
To elaborate a general protocol
to plan and develop restoration projects in the Ebro watershed aimed at improving
the ecological state of degraded river stretches.
These general aims are complemented by two other specific and applied targets:
§
To define ecological restoration
actions in a case study for the application of these perspective.
The main conclusion obtained highlights the adequacy of ecological restoration as a practical tool to recover both the functions and the natural values of the rivers.
This discipline in fluvial systems tries to start or to improve the natural dynamic of the rivers and so, to maintain the self-regulation of the systems.
Three fundamental pillars must be taking into account to reach these targets: social acceptance, available funds and scientific and technical support.
We have proved with a practical case the plausibility for developing an ecological restoration project in our geographical, cultural and social context where
these kinds of projects are not usual.
